Week 26 Update

In Birch class, we have had a busy start to the term. In English, we have started to look at the story Grandad’s Secret Giant. We thoroughly enjoyed making predictions about the story and coming up with our own titles based on the picture. We have also been thinking of adjectives to describe the giant ready to write a character description at the end of the week.

In Science, we are continuing our learning on animal survival. We discussed different ways that humans can harm and help habitats. As a class, we shared some great ideas!

Today we had our second mission to complete. We worked in teams to rescue a stranded whale. We had to conquer obstacles and carry the whale on a stretcher all whilst making sure it had enough water! It was a lot of fun and we showed some good teamwork skills.

Week 25 Update

In Birch, we have had a very busy week! Last week we went to Cattle Country and had a great time! We loved the giant bouncy pillows and the sand pit!

In art we have been learning about portraits. We have looked at different portraits of monarchs and had a go at sketching some. Then last week we used our own portrait to create a regal portrait. It was quite tricky, but we persevered and created some great portraits of ourselves as Kings and Queens!

Yesterday, we performed our class assembly. We were a little bit nervous but we all did a great job! Our adults were very proud of us!

Week 24 Update

In Birch class we have been showing great determination this week. In DT we learnt how to do a running stitch. We worked together to thread our needles and tie knots in our thread. It was tricky at first, but we used our determination and resilience to complete the task. Some of us moved onto sewing a small pouch!
 In English we have written and edited our own narratives. Our adults were very impressed with the vocabulary that we used.
Bedtime Ted has been visiting lots of different houses with his book and hot chocolate! We have had some great adventures with him and love finding out which house he will go to next!

Week 23 Update

In Birch class, we have been impressing our adults with our amazing writing and maths. In English we have been writing setting descriptions about the pond. We used some great adjectives and sentence starters. This week we are going to be writing a letter of advice to Tad.
In Maths, we have been learning about statistics. We have been applying our knowledge of counting in ones, twos, fives and tens to help us interpret and draw different pictograms. We have all learnt about a key and why it is important.
This week we are looking forward to the coronation and all the fun activities that are planned on Friday afternoon.

Week 22 Update

In Birch class, we have been enjoying our new history project called Magnificent Monarchs. Last week we learnt lot of new vocabulary. We applied this vocabulary to today’s lesson where we created a timeline of the monarchs we have had since Anglo-Saxon times to now! We took up a whole corridor!
In maths, we have been impressing our adults with our knowledge of statistics. We have been interpreting tables and drawing tally charts! In English, we have been writing a setting description about the pond from our story Tad. We have been using some great adjectives to describe!

Week 21 Update

We have had an amazing first day back! In English we started looking at our new story called ‘Tad’. As a class, we went to the pond to look at the tadpoles we have. Back in the classroom we worked in pairs to gather and share all of our knowledge about frogs and tadpoles. In Maths, we continued our learning about money and blew our adults away with our knowledge of finding amounts using different coins.
This morning, we had a top secret folder delivered to our classroom. We had to carry out a special mission. We worked in groups to decide what we needed to pack in our bags for a trip in the rainforest.

Week 20 Update

Last week we went on our trip to St Barnabas Church to learn all about the Easter story. We were very well behaved and enjoyed our sunny walk there and back. Inside we visited 5 different stations that taught us about different parts of the Easter story. Our favourite stations were the ‘last supper’ and the ‘Garden of Gethsemane’. We thoroughly enjoyed decorating stones to show things that make us happy.

Back in the classroom, we have been working hard in our writing lessons. We are learning to write a non-chronological report about Captain James Cook. If you see any of us, ask us a fact about him! In science, we have amazed our adults with our science knowledge and today we wrote fact files about plants and what they need to grow.

We are a little bit sad this week, as we are saying goodbye to Mrs Johnson so she can go and have her baby! We have enjoyed having Mrs Johnson in our class this year and cannot wait to meet the baby soon!

 

Week 19 Update

Wow! We have had an amazing day today! We spent most of the day working on our DT project. We have built beach huts. We measured and created the wooden structure first. Then we had to work together to measure the cardboard to create the other features. We included, doors, apex roofs, cladding, balcony’s and windows. As a class, we showed amazing teamwork, and our adults were very impressed with our final products.

On Monday and Tuesday, we also enjoyed some sport workshops. Our favourites were footgolf and fencing. Our adults were very impressed with our determination and resilience skills.

Week 18 Update

We have had a fantastic week in Birch class. In Maths, we have been learning to tell the time. Our adults have been very impressed with how quickly we have learnt new knowledge. In English, we have been improving our work by using a range of different suffixes. We have loved using our book ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ and have written some lovely pieces of work. In RE, we have been learning about how Christians celebrate Easter and it’s importance to them. In class, we decorated Easter eggs with parts of the Easter story. We are looking forward to our Easter event at the Church next week.

Week 17 Update

We have had a great first week of term! We started our week with Ash class watching an online reading event with Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. He spoke to us about how he creates his illustrations and we listened to Julia Donaldson read one of her stories. On Thursday we went for our trip to Tuffley Library. Our adults were very impressed with our listening and behaviour whilst we were there. We loved choosing a book each to bring back to school. In the afternoon, some of our parents joined us for ‘bedtime stories’. We drank hot chocolate and ate biscuits whilst we listened to different stories. As a class, we loved playing with some of the new playground games!

Week 16 Update

In Birch class, we have been completing lots of art activities. We have been learning all about flowers this term. This week we have been focusing on shape, form and texture. We loved using the clay and being creative. As it is Mental Health week, we have been thinking about how our actions can affect other people. We have set up a kindness jar to share all the kind things that we notice in our classroom. At the end of each day, we share the kindness vouchers and put them on our new kindness wall. We are looking forward to Dress to Express this Friday!

Week 15 Update

We had a fantastic school trip to the Mosque. We learnt all about the religion of Islam. We got to try some traditional clothes on and even had a go at following the wash routine that happens before prayer. In class, we have been working hard to retell the story of We’re Going on a Bear Hunt for storytelling week. Over the past few weeks we have been showing our adults how much we have learnt this year. Miss Aston has been very impressed with our attitude and progress that we have made.

 

Week 14 Update

We have been working very hard in Birch class. In Geography, we have been learning about erosion. We worked together to imitate erosion using sand and water. Our adults were very impressed with the vocabulary that we used t describe what was happening. Today, we had PCSO Chloe visit us to talk about the role of a policeman. We enjoyed answering lots of questions. We were very excited to try on some of the police uniform. In maths, we have been learning to measure the mass of objects in kilograms and grams. It has been a lot of fun using the weighing scales.

Week 13 Update

We have had a very busy first week back. In art we have started our new project called Flower Head. In our first lesson we reviewed what a sketch was and had a go at sketching some artificial flowers. In English we have been learning a story called Ocean Meets Sky. We have been learning all about the characters ready to write our own narrative. In Maths we have been impressing our adults with our multiplication and division skills. We are looking forward to starting our new DT project this week!

Week 12 Update

Wow! What a busy few days we’ve had! We have loved sharing our nativity with all our parents this week. Our adults were very impressed with how hard we have been working to learn our lines, songs and dances. We hope you all enjoyed it as well! In Birch class, we have enjoyed playing in the snow with Ash class. We created some snow angels and tried to build a snowman! Today we enjoyed our Christmas dinner. Our adults joined us for lunch and we got to pull some crackers! We have had a very busy and fun time in year 2 so far! We cannot wait to continue our learning in the new year!

Week 11 Update

What a fun week! This week we attended a Multi Skill Sports event with Ash class. We had lots of fun joining in with all the Christmas themed races. It was great to spend some more time with Ash class. All our adults were very impressed with our behaviour and teamwork skills. In science, we have been learning about how animals adapt to their habitat. We learnt all about how some animals camouflage themselves. We set up an investigation to see how effective camouflage is. Ash class helped us out by trying to find the camouflage moths we created. They only found 9 of the 16 that we hid! We worked as a class to analyse the results. This week we are continuing our rehearsals for our nativity production! We cannot wait to show you all our hard work!

Week 10 Update

Birch class have had another amazing week! In art, we have been learning to mix different shades of colours to match the ones used in famous still life paintings. We showed determination and resilience in this lesson. We had the local vicar Reverend Sarah Todd come and visit us for RE this week. She told us the Christmas story and explained why Christmas is important to Christians. She explained how churches get ready to celebrate Christmas and we were allowed to try on some of the clothing a vicar will wear in church. She was very impressed with our RE knowledge and loved listening to us sing one of our nativity songs! This week, we are looking forward to going to the Multi Skills events at Oxstalls Park!

Week 9 Update

Wow! We have had such a busy and fun week! Last week, we went on a trip to another school to listen to the author Philip Ardagh. He was very funny, and we loved getting up to get involved. We loved sending in our pictures of ourselves reading in wild places! In Science, we have been learning about food chains and have been impressing our adults with our ability to draw and label our own food chains. In English this week, we are going to be writing our instructions about how to catch Santa! We have had some great ideas and cannot wait to show our adults all our hard work.

 

Week 8 Update

In Birch class, we have had a very busy week! In Science, we learnt how to identify plants and animals using spotting sheets. Then we used the iPads to find out more information about the animals. We learnt about where they find shelter and what they eat. Today, we made a new healthy school meal. We worked together to prepare the vegetables and then cooked them to make a delicious vegetable casserole! We really enjoyed eating our meal, there was none left! We are looking forward to our trip to the Really Wild Reading Festival tomorrow!

Week 7 Update

This week we started our new art project called Still Life. We looked at a range of different still life artworks from lots of different artists and discussed what we could see. We then chose one of them and had a go at sketching it! It took a lot of concentration! We loved the construction workshop that we attended last week. We worked hard to build some cruise ships and octopuses! In Jigsaw we have been learning about what makes us special. We worked with our partners to discuss similarities! Next week we are looking forward to going to the Really Wild Reading Festival!

Week 6 Update

In Birch class, we have had a busy couple of days. In English and Maths we have been showing our adults what we have learnt so far in year 2. Our adults have been very impressed with our determination. On Monday we started our new science project called Habitats. We learnt what a habitat is and explored some woodland habitats using pictures. We had a great time in DT! We were learning all about recipes and how to follow them. We worked in groups to follow the recipe to create Eton Mess. They were delicious!

Week 5 Update

We have been very busy this week. On Friday we were very brave, and we performed our class poem to Ash class. We added actions and used our performance voices. All the adults were very proud of how much we remembered. In maths, we have been working hard to compare and sort 3D shapes. In English, we have started learning about biographies. We are going to be writing a biography all about Edward Jenner, so we worked in our table groups to gather all the information we knew about him. Thank you to the parents who came to visit our class yesterday!

Week 4 Update

We have had a great week in Birch this week. We have been working hard in Jigsaw and have been learning about rewards and consequences. We loved writing on the tables! In history we have been enjoying learning about historically significant individuals. Today we used the dates they were born to order them on a timeline! As a class we have really enjoyed learning about Rosa Parks, Neil Armstrong and Henry VIII. Our adults have been very impressed with all of us doing our homework!

Week 3 Update

We have been working very hard this week in Birch class. In our writing lessons we have started to write our version of the story ‘Voices in the Park.’ We have been working hard to use our best handwriting so we can hopefully start to join up soon. We can’t wait to share our final pieces of writing with you all next week. In music this week, we practiced making a rhythm using body percussion and a range of different instruments. Our adults were very impressed with how well we shared the instruments and took turns with our partners.

Week 2 Update

Last week we went on our first school trip. We visited The House of the Tailor of Gloucester Musuem where we listened the Beatrix Potter story. We then went into the museum and had to hunt for the mice! I was so much fun! Afterwards we went to see Gloucester Cathedral. We bought some flowers to lay for Queen Elizabeth II. Our adults were very impressed with how respectful we were. As a class, we loved visiting the Gloucester Muesum. Our favourite part was the dinosaurs. Today we had a great time in DT learning about how to use different tools that we would find in the kitchen! We cannot wait to share more of our learning with you all! Week 1 Update

Wow! We have had an amazing start to the new school year. In Birch class, we have been learning a new story called ‘Voices in the Park’ and have been using it to help us learn about the characters.
We were very sad to hear about the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. As a class, we decided to write poems about her, and Miss Aston added these to our jubilee display board. Our adults were very impressed with our writing!
In history, we have started learning about historically significant individuals. We enjoyed working with our partners to read information about them. We are all looking forward to our school trip on Thursday!
